Description:

Reporting directly to the Vice President of Engineering, the successful individual will play a primary role in maintaining the strong working relationship with the Ministry of Environment for the facilities within Sault Ste. Marie. Additionally, you will take the lead regarding technical components of the permitting process for SSM and other market areas as determined by the Company.

Experience:

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 10 years experience within an industrial plant environment with 5 of those years spent interfacing with the Ministry of Environment.  Previous experience in chemical, refinery or oil industry is considered an asset.

Education:
A graduate degree in Chemical Engineering or Environmental Sciences.

Responsibilities/ Requirements:

  • Lead all negotiations and consultations with Ministry of Environment
  • Develop and negotiate new applications.
  • Coordinate all reporting activities and requirements as they are prescribed in the Company’s C of A’s for Air and Waste, including reporting to the local, regional or provincial MOE offices as it pertains to these requirements.
  • Work with personnel assigned to the Sault plant to ensure that operations, procedures documentation and record keeping for all C of A mandated responsibilities are in compliance with regulations and practises of the MOE.
  • Report any observed non-compliance to the VP Engineering, as well as any anticipated non-compliance, with recommended actions to correct or prevent.
  • Provide support to the Plant Operations to mitigate and correct non-compliance events and assist in developing procedures to ensure that any future non-compliance repeat event can be prevented.
  • Ensure that procedures are in place to notify the MOE, as per C of A requirements, the Plant Manager and the Vice-President, Engineering of any instances of non-compliance.
  • Provide monthly audits of various records and responsibilities and provide written reports of these audits to the Vice-President, Engineering with copies to the Plant Manager.
  • Be cognizant of all the Environmental responsibilities undertaken by the Company as part of the C of A’s issued by the MOE and be vigilant in maintaining awareness of the adherence to these standards.
  • Assist the Plant Manager by completing and submitting any C of A amendments that may arise as a result of changes required in the operation of the plant or that may be required to further enhance the environmental compliance of the plant operation.
  • Lead the development for C of A applications for the proposed Commercial Demonstrator plant. These C’s of A may include full or partial Environmental Assessments concurrently or separately and may involve sub-contractors engaged to lead these activities and as such, the Environmental Specialist will assist these entities in pursuit of these assignments.
  • Assist the Plant Manager and Vice-President of Engineering in developing and formulating plans and strategies for continuing improvements to the Companies Environmental compliance capabilities.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as may reasonably be assigned in keeping with the principle of ensuring and assisting the Company in maintaining exemplary standards of Environmental compliance.
