QUESTION:

I resigned four years ago. I had a great work history, but my employer will only verify employment dates. Company policy also states that recommendations are prohibited and questions about references should be directed to HR. Since I resigned, I have filled out hundreds of applications and received only a handful of calls. Temp agencies have been fairly ineffective or reluctant to touch me because of my reference situation. How can I get in the door? I am applying for bank teller jobs now and still getting nothing back.

ANSWER:

Many organizations have a strict policy with respect to providing references and this can be a problem. We would suggest that you see if you can contact a peer or a supervisor that would be willing to provide the reference from home.

If not, you will have to use another employer, or you if you volunteer, use the contact as a reference. Volunteering and building a new reference base is good way to go.
