QUESTION:

I know of someone who has a very pretentious manager who mentioned in a big meeting the other day about how this person makes more than she does (the manager). Is that acceptable for a manager to mention within a meeting among this persons' co-workers? What are the likely repercussions of the co-workers hearing that this person makes more than his manager? How could he avoid being in the salary spotlight among peers?

ANSWER:

It is unfortunate that a Manager would make this statement at a meeting of this nature. Many organizations request/insist that salary information remain confidential. The employee should meet with HR or the appropriate person to discuss their concerns and see how best to deal with the situation in your work environment.
