Assistant Controller

Our client, a world leader in the steel abrasive industry for more than 60 years and a world-leading service partner has a current opportunity for an Assistant Controller.

The Assistant Controller is focused on understanding the impact of operational decision-making on accounting and working with the Controller to communicate the effects to the broader team. Further, the individual in this role will be a roll-up-your-sleeves self-starter who can simplify processes and provide structure, controls, and guidelines to assist the accounting team.

This role will be instrumental in understanding plant operations (inventory, counts, WIP, processes) and their impact on financial results. Further, this role will own and make cost-accounting and intercompany entries and be involved in other full-cycle accounting entries and reconciliations.

OBJECTIVES

  • Decipher system parameters and pull data and information
  • Own cost accounting, inventory revaluations for two plants (standard and FIFO)
  • Intercompany reconciliations and entries (inventory, profit eliminations)
  • Assist with month-end processes (in particular as they pertain to the USA and Mexico)
  • Assist with annual budget and monthly forecast processes
  • Provide business insights
  • Balance Sheet Account reconciliations, reviews
  • Assists in the preparation of schedules for outside auditors
  • Analyzes cost center detail and explains variances
  • Enforce Purchasing Procedures and Controls
  • Support of ERP implementation
  • Consolidation of financials
  • Risk and opportunity management and execution
  • Development of control processes, month-end calendars and schedules
  • Hold team members accountable to deadlines and deliverables

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Accounting Designation and active member status (Canada or USA) – required
  • Minimum seven years combined experience in accounting and finance in manufacturing
  • Previous experience in financial reporting/analysis, budgeting, forecasting
  • Experience and exposure to AS400/Hyperion/M3 nice to have
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel (expert level) and MS Office
  • Detailed knowledge of accounting functions and understanding of cost accounting entries
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with high credibility at all levels of the organization
  • Sense of urgency
  • High level of functionality and perseverance
  • Travel between sites within North America may be required.
