The Halton Regional Police Association covers the areas of Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills and serves approximately 750 sworn and 300 civilian members. Their objective is to promote the individual and collective rights and interests of their members and to make representation on behalf of their members with respect to matters pertaining to the welfare and interest of their members, including working conditions, wages, benefits, pension and any other matter which affects their membership.
The Halton Regional Police Association is currently seeking an experienced Senior Labour Relations Officer.
Education/Experience:
- Minimum university degree in Human Resources or Labour Relations (optional Master of Industrial Relations or Human Resources)
- Minimum 5 - 7 years experience in labour relations, either employer or union representative experience, in the public sector
- Police experience would be considered an asset
- Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Mediation and conflict resolution certification an asset
Responsibilities:
- Manage and/or escalate as required
- Grievance and arbitration management
- WSIB intake and management
- Sick leave and LTD management
- Accommodation issues
- Escalated member benefits issues
- Bargaining preparations (including liaising with other associations regarding their collective agreements)
- Research, as required
Requirements:
- Ability to understand and interpret collective agreements, file grievances and complaints
- Proven ability to work with difficult people and situations, while maintaining composure and professionalism
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, effective presentation skills, proven conflict resolution and negotiation skills, along with a strong work ethic
- Proven problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities
- Ability to conduct research into, and interpret, case law, arbitration divisional, and HRTO decisions
- Comfortable working both within a team environment and independently
- Effective communication skills, both written and oral; time-management skills; ability to establish priorities
- Experience in developing and assisting in bargaining preparation, with a strong emphasis on strategy development
- Ability to conduct in-depth analysis on police comparators
- Must possess a strong understanding of Labour Relations Act, Principles of Workplace Harassment, Occupational Health and Safety Act WSIB, Disability Management/Return to Work/Accommodation, Employment Standards Act, Pay Equity Act, Human Rights Code
