Site Supervisor – Sewer & Watermain
Supporting the Project Manager, the Site Supervisor role supervises and oversees construction projects from start to finish. They provide direction and guidance to forepersons, subcontractors, and workers to ensure a safe and productive workplace. Additional functions include estimating and bidding jobs as well as scheduling work with customers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Schedule, organize and direct the construction activities in accordance with the OHSA, SLG’s H&S Policy and project requirements.
- Ensure that all assignments are completed on time and within budget.
- Instruct all job personnel in a clear, concise manner on all construction and safety aspects of the job when directing work tasks. Maintain safe equipment operation on site and ensure the safety of all site members.
- Monitor all crew activities as it relates to quality, safety and productivity. Conduct weekly site safety meetings and jobsite inspections and further ensures daily equipment circle check and any other job practices and/or forms are completed by the employee.
- Delegate responsibilities in a manner that ensures understanding of tasks/roles required and maintain through performance and accountability.
- Reports daily on progress and labour. Assists lead personnel in resolving any problem areas.
- Plans and coordinates all production work to maximize the efficiency of the production workforce, materials, supplies, equipment and tools.
- Enforces and monitors security procedures to protect the Company’s assets in the field.
- Supervises work assignments and ensures that labour is scheduled to satisfy operating requirements in the most efficient and effective manner.
- Ensure that next day requirements for labour, equipment and supplies are ordered and communicated to the staff.
- Maintains co-operative working relationships with all Company employees. This includes “inter” and “intra” departmental employees. Also included are all customers, sub-contractors, owners, suppliers, etc.
- Alert to opportunities to change equipment, methods, processes and procedures, which can benefit the Company. Research and develop these ideas as appropriate.
- Assures that all field maintenance of tools and equipment is practiced as specified.
- While maintaining a team environment the position requires total objectivity and focus on performance and Company profits. This requires leadership and an ability not to become one of the crew while working alongside the crew - A Coach and a Player.
- Supervises project scheduling and is alert for opportunities to sell the use of Company resources and equipment to other contractors when such resources and equipment are scheduled to be idle on the Company’s job.
- Work with the Project Manager to plan the work sequence using specifications, drawings, and site conditions for effective safety-conscious production.
- Participates as required in the project estimating process including project kick off meetings to ensure accuracy and timeliness of all estimates.
- Assist and help develop improvements on existing procedures and develop new procedures to help improve overall production and financial viability on projects.
- Strive to maximize the profitability of each job by minimizing costs and motivating crew productivity.
- Perform other duties as required.
Essential Qualifications:
- Strong blueprint reading and understanding
- Strong leadership and change management skills
- Solid communication skills and attention to detail
- Proficient knowledge in workplace safety legislation laws including but not limited to employment/labour standards and occupational health and safety,
- Conduct yourself in a professional/mature manner maintaining co-operative working relationships with all Company employees including customers, subcontractors, owners, suppliers etc.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to change in a fast-paced organization
- Must be able to work with little supervision; must be self-directed.
- A willingness to learn on the job and expand knowledge base
- Strong problem-solving skills
Education and Experience:
- Post secondary education or equivalent experience required
- Minimum 5 years of heavy construction with 2 years in a supervisory capacity
- Professional designation (Gold Seal or P. Eng) is an asset but is not a requirement
- CET with 2 years experience (preferred)
- Must be able to work with little supervision; must be self-directed.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean abstract.
Language Skills
- Ability to read, write and speak English
- Ability to interact with a diverse workforce preferred.
